Steve Bruce could make a surprising return to management as the coach of Jamaica’s national football team.

The 63-year-old has been out of work since his dismissal from West Brom in October 2022, following an eight-month tenure at the Hawthorns.

According to sources, Bruce, who has managed clubs like Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday, has entered discussions with officials from Jamaica. A decision regarding his appointment is anticipated within the next 10 days, with insiders describing Bruce as a “serious contender” for the position.

The Reggae Boyz have been without a head coach since the resignation of Heimir Hallgrímsson at the end of last month. The 57-year-old Icelander stepped down after a disappointing Copa America campaign, where Jamaica suffered three consecutive defeats, including a 3-0 loss to Venezuela.

Bruce has expressed a strong desire to return to football management. With over 1,000 games managed across 12 clubs, he ranks among the top five managers in terms of matches overseen since the Premier League’s inception.

Jamaica’s early exit from the Copa America, despite featuring Premier League players such as Michail Antonio, Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Ethan Pinnock, was seen as a significant letdown. The potential appointment of Bruce aims to revitalise the team and leverage his extensive managerial experience to achieve better results on the international stage.

The football community awaits the final decision, which could see Bruce bringing his tactical acumen and leadership to the Caribbean nation’s squad.
