The 2024 Mercury Prize has announced its shortlist for the prestigious Albums of the Year, revealed today on BBC Radio 6 Music.
The selected albums highlight a diverse range of genres and showcase both emerging and established British and Irish talent.
The 12 albums in contention for this year’s prize are When Will We Land? by Barry Can’t Swim, Who Am I by BERWYN, Lives Outgrown by Beth Gibbons, early twenties by Cat Burns, BRAT by Charli XCX, Crazymad, for Me by CMAT, Black Rainbows by Corinne Bailey Rae, Bad with Names by corto.alto, This Could Be Texas by English Teacher, On Purpose, With Purpose by Ghetts, Silence Is Loud by Nia Archives, and Prelude to Ecstasy by The Last Dinner Party.
The Mercury Prize, known for highlighting artistic excellence and innovation in music, selects its nominees through an independent judging panel. This panel includes prominent figures like broadcaster and writer Danielle Perry, musician and broadcaster Jamie Cullum and Radio 2’s head of music Jeff Smith, who also chairs the panel.
Eligible albums are those by British and Irish artists that were released in the UK between July 15, 2023, and July 12, 2024. The winner will be announced in September, with BBC Music, the event’s broadcast partner.
