Chelsea have decided not to punish Enzo Fernández after a video surfaced showing him chanting racist and homophobic slurs about the France team.
The controversial video, posted by Fernández on Instagram, captured him and some of his Argentina teammates chanting offensive remarks while celebrating their Copa América victory. Wesley Fofana, Chelsea and France defender, condemned the incident as “uninhibited racism.”
The Argentina midfielder made a voluntary donation to an anti-discrimination charity, prompting the club’s decision.
Fernández issued an apology on Instagram and privately to his Chelsea teammates. The club announced an internal disciplinary procedure against the 23-year-old, who reiterated his remorse upon joining the squad in Atlanta during their U.S. tour. His teammates, including club captain Reece James, accepted his apology. Fofana was also part of the group Fernández addressed.
Fernández offered to make a significant donation to an anti-discrimination charity, which will be facilitated by the Chelsea Foundation. The club committed to matching his contribution and the internal disciplinary process has since concluded, with Chelsea now considering the matter closed.
Despite the resolution within the club, FIFA continues to investigate the incident and Fernández may still face sanctions from football’s world governing body
