Boxpark will close its Shoreditch site at the end of this summer, marking the end of a 12-year tenure at the location.
The east London venue, hailed as the “world’s first pop-up mall”, will shut down due to the expiration of its lease.
Since opening in October 2011, the Shoreditch site has served as a platform for over 250 independent businesses and attracted more than 1.25 million visitors annually.
The closure follows the landlords, Bishopsgate Goodsyard, securing planning permission to redevelop the 4.5-hectare site into a new residential, retail, and leisure district. Boxpark was a temporary occupant, and with the lease now expired, development work will commence immediately.
Despite the closure, Boxpark is set to launch two new locations in London later this year, in Camden Town and Liverpool Street.
Boxpark CEO Simon Champion expressed hopes of returning to Shoreditch in the future, stating they are already discussing a “new offering” for the area.
The Shoreditch site has supported over 270 jobs annually. In addition to the new London sites, Boxpark plans to expand outside the capital with a debut in Bristol in 2025.
Boxpark founder Roger Wade reflected on the Shoreditch journey as “unforgettable” and expressed gratitude to the staff and local community for their unwavering support over the years.
