BET Launches ‘Queens Of Music’ Series

Queens of Music, a new two-part documentary series set to air in the next few months, aims to highlight the often-overlooked contributions of black women in the British music industry over the years.

First airing on BET International’s YouTube channel and My5, the first episode will air on Thursday, December 12 at 12 p.m., followed by the second episode on December 19 at the same time.

It is the first series which has been developed for the purpose of showcasing the perspectives of black women in music, weaving personal testimony with archival footage in order to share uplifting, untold stories about black women in music. This show focusses on trailblazers who have broken barriers in a predominantly male and white industry, carving out legacies that have shaped British pop culture over the past four decades, contributing to the success of the show.

This series consists of eight episodes, each lasting 44 minutes, that highlight women working in a variety of roles within the music industry, including A&R representatives, managers, agents, and label executives. There are many notable figures involved in the event, including Cookie Pryce, a UK hip-hop pioneer, who transitioned into a successful career behind the scenes, Sandra Scott, who worked with artists like Soul II Soul and Stormzy, and Jada Pollock, Wizkid’s manager who helped catapult his global success. There are also several other professionals featured in the book such as Taponeswa Mavunga, Sheniece Charway, Dellessa James, and Char Grant, Afryea Henry-Fontaine, and Komali Scott-Jones, who are the founders of The Black Music Coalition and The Debrief.
